Are You Serious?
Now I’m sure every aspiring poker player is screaming that if they were to follow the above advice they’ll practically be throwing in every hand. And my response is: Absolutely! If you’re playing more than 1 out of every 4 hands, you’re playing way too many.
Of course, we’ve all seen people who play a lot of hands, and sometimes they get lucky. Some people’s hold-’em strategy is “any two will do,” meaning that no one knows how good their hand really is until after the flop. But that’s financial suicide. Sure, those people will win with garbage once in a while. But these same people always, always, always give their money back eventually. You just have to be patient and wait for their luck to turn.
Now, you all know I’m not a big fan of math nerds and their relentless calculations, but in this case my experience shows that they know what they’re talking about. Having run billions of computer simulations, they’ve proven which starting hands consistently win against other starting hands. This is reality, and you ignore it at your own peril.
Poker? Of course not. These starting hands are for beginners (or losers who think they know what they’re doing but just keep losing), before you discover the subtleties of the game. There’s only so much you can read from sites, and without real-world experience, you’ll never get any better. Stick with these starting hands until you’ve got at least 200 hours under your belt. And even then, you should consider playing more hands only on very rare occasions.
